Financing SME's: Major Challenges and New Solutions!

Ending the European economic crisis within the Eurozone will require increased private sector economic growth, structural reform in the goods, services and labor markets and public sector modernization. Private sector growth, in turn, requires increased private sector investment, particularly at the SME level, with a focus on innovation. That is not an easy equation at a time when falling European Central Bank interest rates do not automatically translate into lower rates for the most vulnerable businesses, i.e. companies who are the most in need of financing. Hence the idea of identifying all available resources, following the lead of many other major industrial economies. The goal is to give new momentum to bank-based financing with support from the European Investment Bank, to optimize start-up financing and to organize a controlled development of securitization activities with a more prominent role for the Stock market, particularly to the benefit of SME's.

The debate also marks the release of the Cahier du Cercle des économistes, co-published by PUF and Descartes & Cie and edited by Jean-Paul Betbèze.
